Cop shot at police station

Durban - A policeman was shot and wounded in an attack on Durban's Wentworth police station early on Thursday morning, police said.

Superintendent Vincent Mdunge confirmed the attack.

Sapa has learnt that two gunmen had earlier robbed an Engen garage of about R25 000. They then proceeded up the road to the nearby police station where the officer was shot.

The shots were heard by another policeman who then started firing at the two men.

The two men, who were wearing balaclavas, then fled.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the wounded officer was shot in the chest and had been taken to St Augustine's hospital in a serious condition.

The motive for the attack on the police station is not known.
