Johannesburg - A 24-year-old man was shot dead and his girlfriend gang-raped and wounded at Soweto in Johannesburg on Tuesday, police said.

Captain Julia Claassen said two men hijacked them in Meadowlands at about 04:00.

"The man and a woman were driving in Meadowlands when they were confronted by two unknown men. They shot him and hijacked his white Toyota Stallion with registration number BTW224GP. The suspects kidnapped the girlfriend," she said.

The attackers parked the panel van next to a house in Meadowlands and raped the woman.

"They shot her in the thigh afterwards, and when the owner of a nearby house went out to investigate, he was shot and injured in the hand."

The men left the woman and drove away.

Both the injured people were taken to a local hospital.

Claassen said the attackers were still at large, armed and dangerous and should not be confronted.

"Anyone who knows their whereabouts should contact the nearest police station or call Crime Stop number 08600 10111," she said.

The police were investigating cases of hijacking, murder, two attempted murders, kidnapping and rape, she said.
