Pretoria
- An East Rand nurse, who refused to take part in the nationwide public
service strike, was gunned down by three men after finishing her night
shift at Natalspruit Hospital on Monday morning.
Esther
Mthombeni is in the same hospital's ICU after being shot in the stomach
three times. By Tuesday afternoon she was in a stable condition.
Captain
Mega Ndobe, Katlehong police spokesperson, said Mthombeni was on her way
home at about 05:30 on Monday morning when three gunmen opened fire at
her near the hospital.
Although
it wasn't immediately clear if the incident was related to the 20-day-old
strike, the possibility was being investigated.
Ndobe
said Mthombeni was carrying her handbag with her cellphone and purse,
but nothing was stolen.
"They
just shot her and ran off," Ndobe said.
The men
drove off in a white Mazda.
