Police officers shot with their own guns By Jeff Wicks
A police officer was killed and another is fighting for his life after a group of heavily armed men disarmed them and then gunned them down at Duff's Road railway station near KwaMashu on Thursday. Police spokesperson Muzi Mngomezulu said three uniformed officers from the railway unit had been on a routine patrol when they were confronted by five gunmen. One officer ran off, and the gunmen robbed the other two of their pistols and then shot them at point blank range. "The motive at this stage appears to be robbery, as two police service pistols were stolen," Mngomezulu said.
Shell casings found at the scene indicated that the gunmen were armed with both 9mm pistols and automatic rifles. Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said that despite efforts of paramedics to resuscitate the constable, he had been declared dead at the scene. "The officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and lower abdomen." His colleague, a student constable, was wounded in the neck and chest, and was taken to Mount Edgecombe Hospital in a critical condition.
