Pretoria businessman shot dead
By Barry Bateman
July 14 2007 at 03:54PM

Police have launched a manhunt for the murderers of Eric Lerata, general manager of the Nuclear Energy Corporation of SA.

He was shot dead in a suspected hijacking outside his Montana, Pretoria, home hours after he returned from a week-long business trip to France.

Relatives and friends, as well as colleagues from Necsa - which had appointed Lerata in April - gathered at the scene in Ibis Street on Friday.

Lerata's lifeless body lay in the middle of the road covered with a blanket for almost five hours as police forensic experts combed the scene for clues.

A man who lives about 100m from the crime scene said he had found airline baggage stickers outside his home. It was unclear whether they were connected to the murder, but he handed them to officers on the scene.

Sinoville police station commissioner Superintendent Nico Kukkuk said that at about 7.20am on Friday, an unknown number of men in a Toyota overpowered Lerata and his airport chauffeur service driver as they pulled up outside the home in an Opel Corsa.

He said one shot was fired, fatally wounding Lerata. Kukkuk said the killers escaped with the vehicle. The driver was unhurt, but he was treated for shock.

Schalk Coetzee said he was driving along Veda Street when Lerata's driver ran in front of his vehicle.

"He was running like a madman; you could see he was being chased. I slammed on the brakes and he ran passed me. Two cars came flying out of Ibis Street and I saw a man lying in the road," he said.

By late Friday night, police said they had no leads on the murder. - Barry Bateman
