Johannesburg - A Chinese man and woman are recovering in hospital after they were shot and beaten in Germiston.

The two were hurt despite repeatedly telling their attackers to take everything and leave them alone, Netcare Union Hospital told News24.

The 52-year-old man and his 40-year-old friend and colleague were on a road behind the train station in Germiston when they were attacked in broad daylight.

"They were in their car on Keswick road receiving money from someone when they were approached by two unknown men carrying firearms," Germiston police spokesperson Steady Nawa said.

He said full details of the incident were not known and would form part of the investigation.

'Kicked and beaten'

"Paramedics arrived on the scene and were informed that the couple had been hijacked," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman.

"The man was in a serious condition with a gunshot wound to his right thigh and a fracture to his thigh bone."

The woman suffered a serious head injury, said Dollman.

"Her attackers threw her from the vehicle and she had either been beaten or kicked in the head."

The two were rushed to Netcare Union Hospital where the man was placed in ICU.

"He's doing very well," Netcare Union Hospital spokesperson said Gathlyn Watkins.

"He will be discharged from ICU later on Wednesday and will be moved to another ward."

The woman was also "doing well" and had lacerations and minor injuries.

'Broken' English

She was reportedly dragged out of the car despite the man's protests to take everything and leave them alone.

Watkins said the pair's English was broken and the hijackers possibly did not understand them.

The man owns a shop in Johannesburg and has been living in South Africa for ten years, as has the woman.

The hijackers made off with the car, a champagne-coloured Toyota Tazz, as well as cellphones and money.
