'Merciless' attack leaves son dead, husband critical A Midlands mother this week told how a group of armed robbers killed her son and critically wounded her husband. Distraught Anitha Singh, 43, of Thornville described the attackers as 'merciless' after leaving her 19- year-old son, Ashwin, and her businessman husband, Maan, in a pool of blood two weeks ago. Ashwin was shot in the stomach and his father was shot four times in his abdomen, thigh and ankle. 'These men just barged in and took over our home. My three sons and I were fast asleep when we heard my husband scream,' said Singh. 'We heard four gunshots and knew immediately that he was in trouble.' Ashwin ran to his father's room to help, and Singh heard another gunshot ring out. 'My angel was on the floor in so much pain. Blood was everywhere. They walked around the house in full control, making threats and various demands. 'They hit my son Ranesh with the gun and forced the rest of my family into the lounge.' The men demanded money, jewellery, guns and cellphones. 'I gave them all the money I had, but they wanted more. All I wanted to do was to get them out as soon as possible so that I could get my husband and son to hospital.' She said her son asked her for some water. 'I was held at gunpoint and taken to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Tears rolled down my face when I fed Ashwin. 'The men then dragged him into the lounge and left him there to bleed. My heart was ripped open when I saw my baby just lying there, but I was helpless.' The men tied their hands with cable wire, disconnected the telephone line and destroyed the car wiring before leaving. 'Somehow my son managed to free himself from the cables. He jumped out the window, kicked the doors open and freed us. 'He managed to join together cables in his car and rushed my husband and son to hospital. But it was too late for Ashwin. ' Singh's husband is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at Grey's Hospital. Midlands police spokesman Inspector Joey Jeewan said a case of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery was being investigated. |
