Highway mayhem as robbery victim shoots back
Melanie Peters August 26 2006 at 12:49PM

The highway below the University of Cape Town turned into a battle zone as a shootout between highway robbers and their victim broke out at midday on Friday.

Other drivers were stopped in their tracks as a hail of bullets flew in all directions. Traffic was backed up for kilometres after police cordoned off the crime scene.

A city businessman, who had been loaned a courtesy car while his own vehicle was in for repairs, ran out of petrol on the bridge on the M3 near the university as he was transporting R24 000 in staff wages.

Peter Petersen, owner of a construction company, called for assistance and was waiting for a friend to bring him some petrol when three men approached him and held him at gunpoint.

"They stole R24 000, my cellphone and my wallet."

He said as they turned to walk away, he drew his gun. One of the perpetrators turned around and saw him. A shootout followed.

He said: "I took shelter behind the bakkie and fired back at them. A volley of shots was fired. At least 20 rounds from both sides. The bakkie was riddled with bullets. They ran off in the direction of the university."

He said he did not know who called the police who were "on top of things" and were trying to track the men down.

"This was not the first time I've been robbed. Crime in this country is out of control. Something needs to be done. It cannot go on like this."

Police said no arrests had been made yet.
