Off-duty metro cop kills robber

Johannesburg - A metro police officer shot dead an armed robber who attempted to rob a woman of her cellphone, Johannesburg metro police said on Thursday.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the off-duty officer was in his private car with his family in Bertrams on Wednesday night, when he saw three men confronting a woman and her son. One of the men was pointing a firearm at the woman.

When the officer tried to intervene, the robber shot him twice in the upper leg, said Minnaar.

The officer shot back at the robber, killing him instantly, and the other two men fled from the scene.

"One illegal firearm which was used by the robber with the serial number filed off was recovered," said Minnaar.

The officer was taken to Milpark hospital in a stable condition and was discharged late on Wednesday night.
