Robber dies in shoot-out Johannesburg - A robber died and two people were critically wounded in a shoot-out inside the Spar supermarket at Sandringham in Johannesburg on Tuesday night, said police. Captain Bheki Mavundla said a gang of seven men posing as customers entered the shop at 19:00. They were all armed with handguns. While two of the men forced the manager to open the safe, the others held cashiers at gunpoint and took money from the tills. A shootout ensued between customers and the robbers, he said. One of the men shot was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. It was later established that he was one of the robbers. A car-guard was wounded in the left leg in the exchange of fire and a 50-year-old customer was wounded in the pelvis. Both were taken to hospital in critical, but stable conditions, Mavundla said, adding that the police preferred to withhold the names of the hospitals "for their safety". The robbers took an unknown amount of money and fled in a getaway car. He said supermarket employees received police trauma counselling after their ordeal. |
