Durban - A shopkeeper on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast shot
dead a man who attempted to hold up his shop, police said on Thursday.
Superintendent Zandra Hechter said two men entered the
African Supply Store in Marburg on Wednesday just before it closed for
the day.
As one of the men pretended to pay for a packet of chips,
the shopkeeper's wife noticed that the man standing at the doorway
had a gun.
As the shopkeeper, who had been on the veranda, went behind
the counter, his wife ducked behind the counter and pressed a panic button.
Several shots were exchanged between the shopowner and
the gunman. The shopowner was shot in his arm and the gunman suffered
a fatal gunshot wound to his lower abdomen.
The second robber fled. It is not known if he was caught
in the cross-fire.
Hechter said the two robbers had been linked to robberies
in the Marburg area near Port Shepstone.
Detectives are investigating.
