Man killed after attacking cop

Johannesburg - A mentally ill man was shot dead after he attacked an off duty policeman in Amandawe outside Scottburgh on Friday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.

Captain Vincent Pandarum said Inspector Abraham Ngbobo was walking outside his house when Bonga Ncwane allegedly attacked him with an oukapi knife.

Ngbobo was stabbed in the arm and his fingers were also sliced.

After a struggle he shot Ncwane in self-defence.

The bullet hit Ncwane in the arm and then entered his stomach.

He died on the scene.

The Independent Complaints Directorate is investigating. An inquest docket has also been opened.
