Durban - A 26-year-old man was shot dead during an attempted
robbery in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.
Inspector Joey Jeevan said Nkosenye Emmanuel Mbona and three
other men attempted to rob a man at the corner of Pietermaritz and Retief
streets in the CBD on Monday afternoon.
A security guard who was standing outside Madiba Supermarket
intervened and a struggle ensued.
The four men attacked the security guard with their knives
and attempted to disarm him. The guard broke free and fired at them, hitting
Mbona in the head and neck.
The other three robbers ran away. The security guard and
the man who was being robbed also fled from the scene where Mbona lay
dead.
The 30-year-old security guard handed himself over at the
Pietermaritzburg police station on Tuesday morning. He was subsequently
taken in for questioning and has since been released.
"The three remaining men are known and arrests are
imminent," Jeevan said.
