Robber-cop' shot dead Johannesburg - A police officer driving a bakkie loaded with stolen cigarettes was shot dead in an exchange of fire between robbers and security guards on Monday, Mpumalanga police said. Superintendent Mtsholi Bhembe said a bakkie transporting cigarettes was hijacked on the road between Barberton and Badplaas on Monday morning. The hijackers drove away in the bakkie and a Corsa sedan, but the bakkie suddenly stopped and an alarm went off. Security guards stopped to investigate and the driver of the bakkie fired shots at them. The guards returned fire, hitting the driver in the neck and head. He died on the scene. Afterwards the Corsa with two occupants came on to the scene. The two opened fire on the security guards, who fled to a nearby sugar cane field. One of the men took the bakkie and drove away. Police were called and they intercepted the cars. A man was arrested and six boxes of cigarettes recovered. The other robber escaped. Bhembe said the shot man was identified as a police officer. He said the police officer had reported for duty in the morning but had requested to go home early, saying he had some family matters to attend. |
