Johannesburg - A robber was found dead in a driveway after a shootout with the owner of a house in Johannesburg's northern suburbs on Tuesday night, said Netcare 911.

"He was assessed by the medical team but he had already died from his injuries," spokesperson Nick Dollman said on Wednesday.

He said three robbers attacked the 49-year-old homeowner when he arrived at his house in a complex in Sundowner at 22:00.

They held him at gunpoint and forced him to the ground. A scuffle broke out. While his assailants were hitting him on the head, the man pulled out his handgun and opened fire on them. They fled.

Dollman said the homeowner was taken to the Netcare Olivedale hospital.

He said a firearm and a bloodied knife were found on the scene.
