He looked like a cowboy' Christel Raubenheimer, Beeld Pretoria - "They didn't look like people who'd want to stop after an accident, so we gave chase," says Jorge Ferreira, executive chief of Protea Coin, a security company. He and Joe de Beer, a managing director, had been on their way from Rustenburg to Pretoria when a car crashed into a bakkie on the N4 near de Wildt. The car sped off and Ferreira and De Beer decided to give chase. "Other people had stopped at the scene of the accident. "It would have been irresponsible if we had let them get away," Ferreira said on Sunday. "When they drove off they didn't look like people who would want to stop after an accident." The three men in the car drove about 15km at high speed, and nearly hit a group of children. In Ga-Rankuwa the driver lost control over the car and crashed into a hedge. The men jumped out. "They were all armed and one even had two guns. He looked like a cowboy," said De Beer. The two pursuers were threatened with firearms and fired a shot at the suspects. The driver of the car was arrested, but his two companions got away. He was carrying two unlicensed firearms. "We always tell our people crime must not be allowed to get the upper hand, and we try to lead by example. "We should stop complaining about crime and do something to help the police." |
