Robber killed at Cresta centre

Johannesburg - A robber was shot dead in a shootout with security guards on Monday when he and four others tried to rob security guards at the Cresta shopping centre police said.

Spokesperson Inspector Sefako Xaba said two security guards had collected cash from a shop in the centre when five men armed with pistols attacked them around 11:30.

"The guards were going out of the mall, with one carrying a cash box, when the robbers started shooting at them.

"They returned fire and hit one of the robbers in the chest," said Xaba.

The man was certified dead by paramedics at the scene.

"The other four fled the scene on foot without taking any cash."

The security guards were not injured.

Police recovered a firearm which was used by the robbers.
