A Durban man shot a robber on Friday after a gang broke
into his Phoenix spice shop, police said.
Police spokesperson Inspector Michael Read said the incident took place
at 2.25am in Donkin Road, Phoenix.
Spice shop owner Sayeed Chohan, 60, was informed that some men had broken
into his shop.
"He took his firearm, went to the shop and confronted the robbers who
were also armed," said Read.
The robbers were trying to flee with R17 000 in cash when Chohan shot
one of the men in the leg, he said.
The robber was apprehended and the money recovered.
Police said the alleged robber would appear in the Verulam magistrate's
court when he had recovered.
"Chohan has not been charged because he was defending himself.
A case of housebreaking and theft has been opened," Read said.
