'I feel angry and unsafe'

Bloemfontein - A young mother thought only of her two children and how she wanted to live after being wounded during a hijacking.

"I'm angry and feel unsafe," said Adél Pieterse, 29, after being wounded by a suspected robber, who stole her car and everything inside it early on Sunday morning.

"Somebody, I don't know who, should do something. This cannot go on."

According to Pieterse she and her aunt, Heleen van Zyl, 47, attended a party at a friend's townhouse.

In stable condition

From the townhouse they left for her aunt's flat in the city, where she stopped her BMW in front of the block of flats in Douglas Street.

Van Zyl got out to open the garage door of the block of flats.

"An unknown man appeared out of the blue and put a gun to her head."

Pieterse said she tried to get his attention and for him to move the gun from Van Zyl's head by revving the car.

The robber pointed his gun at her and told her to get out.

She said she tried to pick up her handbag while getting out, but before she could properly open the door, he shot her through the closed window.

She said at that moment she was not thinking about what they were taking from her, but only hoped to live.

The robber opened the door and pulled her from the car.

There was blood everywhere and Van Zyl walked around the car to help her.

Another man appeared and the two left with her car.

According to Pieterse, residents of the flats rushed to their assistance and took her to their flat.

"I don't know who they were, but they called for help," said Pieterse.

"I just thought about my two daughters, Bianca, 7, and Anél, 5. They are still so young."

She said she was glad they were not with her, because they would have been hurt.

She was taken to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, where she is in a stable condition.

Pieterse, an administrative official of the Ocean Basket group in the city, was concerned about not being able to move her right hand, which she uses when writing.

"I don't know how I'll be able to do my work," she said while trying to move her fingers.

According to police spokesperson captain Magda Muller the car was later found in the Mangaung area by members of the Kagisanong police station.

Charges of hijacking and attempted murder are being investigated.

Nobody has been arrested yet.
